Greenville’s Uptown retailers hope to cash in on consumers who want to shop local during the annual “Small Business Saturday” event to be held Nov. 29.
Uptown Greenville partnered with several media channels to promote the signifance of “keeping it local.” In addition to a print media partnerships with The Daily Reflector and The Greenville Times, a live radio remote (WTIB, 103.7 FM) will be held at The Varsity Club on Black Friday from 5:00-7:00pm. Organizers will talk to different businesses to showcase their promotions. Additionally, a number of downtown retailers and restaurants are offering discounts on purchases and other special deals.
“We appreciate people choosing to shop local and especially downtown,” said Tony Khoury, Uptown board chair. “Many retailers and restaurants will be open both days (Black Friday as well as Small Business Saturday).”
Founded by American Express and held each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday is an exclusive event for small retailers and other community businesses.
According to the third-annual Small Business Saturday Insights Survey, released by the National Federation of Independent Business and American Express, consumer support for independently owned businesses is increasing. More than three quarters of shoppers say they will be spending more or the same amount on Small Business Saturday as they did in 2013.
Five years after its inauguration, half of U.S. consumers report they are aware of Small Business Saturday, and among those who are aware, 82 percent say they plan to patronize a small, independently owned retailer or restaurant on Nov. 29.
The National Retail Federation (NRF) suggests going to visit mom-and-pop businesses is a social experience as well as a buying mission.
“More than just a shopping day, Small Business Saturday highlights the millions of entrepreneurs and visionaries who help make retail the dynamic and community-focused industry that it is,” said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay.
